INDIAN ORCHARD- Orlando Ramos—candidate for City Council Ward 8—has submitted a formal request for a public meeting concerning the proposed closing of the Indian Orchard post office to be held in the Indian Orchard neighborhood. Last night, October 4th, Mr. Ramos attended a public hearing held at the Post Office’s Main Branch located at 1883 Main Street in Downtown Springfield.

“It was not surprising to see that the meeting was poorly attended; it was held at a location that is 8 miles away from Indian Orchard, and it began at 6:30 at night;” said Ramos. “This is exactly the problem that we are facing; many people—particularly seniors—in Indian Orchard have difficulty getting to other parts of town and thus do not want the Indian Orchard Branch closed. Had this meeting been held in Indian Orchard, I am certain that there would have been many, many more people there.”

In a letter addressed to the District Discontinuance Coordinator, Ramos requests that there be a public meeting to be held in Indian Orchard, to give the residents an opportunity to voice their concerns before any official decision is made. In addition, he said that “the Indian Orchard branch is vital to the overall function of our community, and must be spared.”

The postal service has mailed a survey to all residents. The survey must be filled out and submitted before October 13th. Ramos is urging all residents to submit the survey before the deadline. He also said that he will be asking the other members of the Indian Orchard Citizens Council to begin collecting signatures for a petition to be submitted before the 13th.

Anyone interested in signing the petition should contact Orlando Ramos at 413-455-1618 or join the Save Our Post Office group on Facebook.
