City Council Candidate Targets Absentee Landlords

Contact: Orlando Ramos 413-221-3556

Orlando Ramos—candidate for City Council Ward 8—is proposing the creation of a Landlord Registration Ordinance in Springfield, in an effort to reduce the problem of absentee landlords. “The city of Springfield—including Ward 8—has a major problem with absentee landlords, and something has to be done. The buildings owned by negligent absentee landlords breed unmaintained properties, crime and drugs; this must end” Ramos said.

The city does not currently have legislation to address the issue. The Landlord Registration Ordinance is a piece of legislation that would require all landlords living outside of the city to register with the city annually—as a way to keep track of property owners and make sure that they are keeping up with the proper maintenance and inspections.

“The days of people buying rental property in Springfield and letting it deteriorate while maximizing their profits are over! It’s time for us to clean up the city, and hold these absentee landlords accountable.”
