After the City of Springfield’s 16th homicide of the year happening over the weekend, there are many residents asking what Government intends to do about the crime in the City. Orlando Ramos—candidate for City Council Ward 8—is proposing an idea to keep his neighborhood safe.  Ramos is recommending a Safety Initiative specifically designed for the Indian Orchard neighborhood.

“The City’s North End has the C3 Initiative, Forest Park has the Badge Unit, Downtown has a Public Safety Initiative, and then there’s the Mason Square Initiative; Indian Orchard also needs a plan” Ramos said.

Although Indian Orchard has traditionally been one of the safest neighborhoods in the City, Ramos says that he will work together with law enforcement in order to keep it that way.  “There have been some recent incidents in the area involving drug and gang activity, thus we have to make sure we’re being proactive before things get out of hand.”

Ramos says that the Indian Orchard Safety Initiative should include a community-business partnership, collaboration with SPD’s gang task-force and the Vice Squad, as well as a police substation located in the area—adding that a substation would also be beneficial to the abutting neighborhoods because it would cut down on response time.
