Biography

Proud Daddy

Proud Daddy

Orlando Ramos was born and raised in the City of Springfield.  Raised by a single mother—along with his two sisters—in the Pine Point section of the City, he attended Freedman Elementary School, John F. Kennedy Middle School, and graduated from Putnam Vocational Technical High School in the year 2000 with a degree in Carpentry.  After High School, he began his career in the construction industry as a construction laborer.  In 2002, Orlando became a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 108—he was appointed as a Union Steward in 2007, and was elected to the executive board in 2008 as Conductor.  Although he still serves on the Executive Board and remains a proud member of the UBC, an on-the-job injury combined with the economic recession led Mr. Ramos to make the difficult decision to leave the field and pursue a college degree.  He began taking classes at STCC in January of 2010 and graduated with High Honors in 2012.  Mr. Ramos currently attends the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.

Orlando Ramos has been a homeowner in the Indian Orchard section of the City since 2007, where he lives with his 9 year old daughter.   He has always been active in his community; volunteering hundreds of hours towards helping many different local organizations—including Habitat for Humanity, Keep Springfield Beautiful, Springfield Health Disparities Project, and the Massachusetts Latino Chamber of Commerce, among others—to help make his community stronger.  He has been instrumental in organizing community events such as C.O.R.I. Independence, Back to School backpack drives, and anti-violence rallies.

In 2008, Orlando worked as an intern for the Western Mass Governor’s office.  He has been a member of the Indian Orchard Citizens Council, the Ward 8 Democratic Committee and the Labor Council for Latin-American Advancement since 2008.  He now works as District Director for the office of State Senator James T. Welch (Hampden District).  In 2011 he was appointed by the Mayor of Springfield to serve as the City’s youngest License Commissioner.  Orlando Ramos brings youth and experience along with the ambition to help make the quality of life better for all of the residents of Ward 8—and the City of Springfield as a whole.
